Epic Games said it developed the Fortnite game, which will be available on the Microsoft Xbox Series X and Sony PS5 console platforms scheduled for release later this year in the first place. While initially still using the Unreal 4 engine, the console version will also be upgraded to a version developed using the Unreal 5 engine by mid-2021. For developers, Unreal 5 provides the appropriate toolkit support for developing cross-platform games.

Unreal 4.25, launched shortly this month, is the first game engine to support next-generation consoles PS5 and Xbox Series X. The Niagara VFX and Chaos physics effects are already being used in Fortnite.

Fortnite is now available on all platforms, including Switch and smart devices, and is expected to open up a larger graphics gap with other devices when the Unreal 5 version goes live.

Fortnite is reported to have over 350 million registered players. As one of the most profitable games on the market today, we're not surprised that Epic Games is bringing it to next-gen console platforms.
